 Whisky tasting

My daughter gave me a voucher for a whisky tasting and distillery tour of the  Wire works distillery at Ambergate a few miles down the Derwent valley from home. My son and I had a lovely afternoon with a small group tour followed by a tasting of four of the wire works products.

The tasting was held in a  room adjacent to the shop, the lady who had led the tour of the site hosted the tasting, the only slight disappointment were the boards on which the lovely samples were presented.

I messaged the distillery a few days after the visit, thanking them for a lovely afternoon and suggesting that the tasting samples may look better presented on part of an old barrel stave. This fell on deaf ears and was consigned to the memory banks.

The image is of a JD storage rack I made some time ago using left over match boarding from our porch ceiling, perhaps I could do something similar for wire works?

 Burns night

Having agreed to host Burns night, I decided to have a go at making some boards for a whisky flight. Offcuts of staves from previous projects were dragged from the wood rack and 6 tasting glasses were purchased form the wire works distillery.

My biggest forstner bit was not large enough to make the 50mm diameter recess, but I made a start with the drill then finished with my carving tools.

I made 3 holes in each board and being careful not to remove too much character sanded and waxed the staves to finish.

A good night was had by all, but I need to get more glasses and perhaps make a 6 hole version so I can share more lovely whiskies.
